How does magnetic paint work?

Magnetic paint is a wall paint containing fine iron particles. Iron is a ferromagnetic material, which means that magnets are attracted to it. These iron particles are distributed across the wall as the paint is applied. To ensure the magnets adhere better, you should apply several coats of the magnetic paint.

How well do magnets stick to magnetic paint?

The number of coats of paint has a significant impact on how well magnets adhere to the surface. The more coats you apply to the wall, the more iron particles are present on the surface. This improves the adhesive force. With three coats of the ferromagnetic paint, you can already attach up to four sheets of A4 paper to the wall using strong office magnets.
Please note: Magnetic paint is not magnetic in itself. It simply creates an iron-rich surface to which magnets can adhere.

Applying magnetic paint correctly

Magnetic paint can be applied to most smooth surfaces, such as plastered walls, plasterboard or wood.

• Prepare the surface just as you would for a standard coat of wall or emulsion paint.
• Stir the magnetic paint thoroughly before use to ensure the iron particles are evenly distributed for the best results.
• Allow each coat of magnetic wall paint to dry for 4 hours before applying the next one.

If desired, you can paint over the magnetic wall paint with acrylic paint or another product of your choice. Wait 6 hours before applying a top coat with standard wall paint. If you are planning to paint over it with chalkboard or whiteboard paint, you should even wait 2 weeks to prevent unwanted surface textures. Calculating the right amount of magnetic paint

The amount of magnetic paint required depends on the size of the surface to be painted and the desired adhesive force. Use the following guidelines:

• 0.5 litres: 2 coats on an area of approx. 1–1,5 m²
• 1 litre: 2 coats on an area of approx. 2–3 m²
• 2.5 litres: 2 coats on an area of approx. 5–7,5 m²
• 4 litres: 2 coats on an area of approx. 8–12 m²

For effective magnetic performance, you should plan on applying at least two coats of magnetic paint. For a particularly strong adhesive force, we recommend three to four coats.

If you are unsure, choose the larger container size. This ensures you have enough paint for an even build-up of layers and allows you to apply additional coats to enhance the adhesive force of the magnetic surface. Design options with magnetic wall paint

Rectangular, round, L-shaped or wavy: you can apply the magnetic paint any way you want. Just mask off a specific area on the wall, paint it with magnetic paint and then apply the top coat of your choice. Now you can discreetly hang photos, pictures or postcards. Possible application areas for magnetic paint

In the kitchen: Paint your chosen surface with magnetic paint and apply emulsion, chalkboard, or whiteboard paint after drying. This special communication area allows you and your family to note or hang up different things, such as shopping lists, dates for birthdays and meetings, recipes, kind messages and more.

On room doors: Interior doors can also be easily transformed into large surfaces for magnets. First, paint one or both sides of the door with magnetic paint. Once dry, paint over the grey paint with white emulsion paint. Now your door has turned into a photo wall, ready to receive photos or name tags.

In the children's room: Children can use the magnetic wall to attach their artwork, posters and photos, for example. The wall can be redecorated again and again to their heart’s content.

At the kindergarten and school: The concept is the same as for the use in the children’s room. The advantage of magnetic paint is that you can easily turn underutilised surfaces into useful blackboards, which can be of great benefit, especially in smaller classrooms.

In the office: For brainstorming or creative processes, apply whiteboard paint on top of magnetic wall paint. Use this versatile surface to keep notes, record tasks, appointments etc. and simultaneously attach documents with magnets.

Magnets for use on magnetic paint

Strong neodymium magnets, such as our cube magnets, disc magnets or cone magnets, are suitable for use on magnetic paint. Magnetic sheets and magnetic tapes also work on magnetic walls. Ferrite magnets, on the other hand, are usually too weak for magnetic wall paint. Can magnetic paint be used outdoors?

No, magnetic paint is not suitable for outdoor use. Because it contains iron particles, magnetic paint can rust. Magnetic paint is also unsuitable for areas where it will be exposed to moisture, such as bathrooms.

Is magnetic paint solvent-free?

Yes, our magnetic paint is solvent-free and water-based. This makes it suitable for indoor use.

Can magnetic paint be combined with other special paints?
